Henan Map

The Central Plains mainly refers to Henan Province, referred to as "Yu", and the provincial capital is Zhengzhou. Henan is the most important birthplace of Chinese civilization, Chinese history and the Chinese nation. More than 4,000 years ago, Henan was Yuzhou, the center of China's nine states, so it was referred to as "Yu" and also known as "Zhongzhou", "Central Plains" and "Zhongtu". Henan was the main place where the Huaxia people lived in the early days. For most of the history of China, the political, economic and cultural center was in the Central Plains region of the Yellow River Basin. Only by competing in the Central Plains could one dominate the world. Except for the Southern and Northern Dynasties of China, everyone believed that the dynasty that incorporated the Central Plains into its territory was the orthodox dynasty of China. Both the Mongolian rulers and the Manchu rulers believed that the dynasty that incorporated the Central Plains into its territory was the orthodox dynasty of China, rather than only ruling the old Mongolian lands or the old Manchu (Jurchen) lands, and established the Yuan Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty respectively to unify China.

Since the Xia Dynasty, the first dynasty in Chinese history, established its capital in Henan, there have been successively Xia (Yangcheng-Dengfeng, Zhengzhou, Xiayi Yangzhai-Xuchang Yuzhou, Zhenwu-Luoyang Yanshi), Shang (Xibo, Nanbo, Yindu, Chaoge), Western Zhou (formed Zhou Luoyi), Eastern Zhou, Western Han (early), Eastern Han, Cao Wei, Western Jin, Northern Wei, Sui, Tang, Wu Zhou, Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han, Later Zhou, Northern Song and Jin, etc. More than 20 dynasties had their capital in Henan for more than 2,000 years. Among the eight ancient capitals in China, there are four in Henan, including Zhengzhou, the former capital of the six kingdoms of Xia, Shang, Hao, Zheng, and Han, Anyang, the former capital of the Yin and Shang Dynasties, Luoyang, the imperial capital of the Thirteen Dynasties, and Kaifeng, the ancient capital of the Seven Dynasties. The Central Plains is located in the north and is vast. Since ancient times, it has been an area where northern peoples and Central Plains peoples have intermingled. The exchanges between people of all ethnic groups in China have gathered here through various channels. Therefore, the nomadic peoples in the north and the Chinese Han people in the Central Plains have Two different yet interdependent histories and cultures merge here. From the historical development sequence, there are Rongdi in the pre-Qin period, Xiongnu and Xianbei in the Qin and Han dynasties, Rouran and Chile in the Wei, Jin and Northern Dynasties, Turks, Uighurs and Xi in the Sui and Tang dynasties, Khitan and Shasha in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Song, Liao and Jin dynasties. Tuo, Jurchen, Mongolian, Manchu and other ethnic groups in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties all had a history of formation, development, growth and mutual integration in this land in the north. The "Five Hu" and the Khitan (Liao) had a history of being separated and ruled as kings here. Therefore, the integration of national cultures in the Central Plains region cannot but have dual implications formed under this natural geographical and historical background. Namely: plain culture and grassland culture; farming culture and animal husbandry culture; Chinese culture and Hu culture; Central Plains culture and northern culture. This is the result of regional ethnic integration, mutual absorption of strengths, and common development. It is the characteristic of ethnic integration in the Central Plains region. It also shows its important position in the historical development of Chinese civilization [1] and its unique contribution. However, Henan, located in the Central Plains, is also one of the areas with the most serious wars and natural disasters in Chinese history. Various princes and heroes competed for it, and it has been a battleground for military strategists in the past dynasties. At different periods in history, large numbers of Henan people moved from the Yellow River Basin to foreign lands to avoid war, which greatly promoted the development of many parts of the motherland and the spread of Chinese civilization.
