Influence of East Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project on Southern Lakes

The eastern route project mainly crosses the Qinling and Huaihe rivers along the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal. Huaihe River in Qinling Mountains is an important dividing line of China climate zone. The South-to-North Water Transfer Project will inevitably affect the lakes in the south. First of all, the seawater from the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River to Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake mouth is backward flowing. The water pollution in the eastern route is serious, and the geological safety in the western route will be more destructive than the Three Gorges Project in terms of immigration and cultural relics. Schistosomiasis is also a heavy burden.
