Shi Gongan", also known as "Five Women and Seven Chastities", is a popular folk case novel in the Qing Dynasty. The early version is also known as "The Biography of Shi Gong'an", "The Strange Stories of Shi's Case", and "The Wonders of Baiduan". There is no author. There are existing prefaces from the third year of Jiaqing (1798) and a published version from the fourth year of Daoguang (1824). It can be inferred that it was probably written during the Qianlong and Jiaqing years. The story began as a storyteller, and was later processed and performed into a novel with 528 chapters. It mainly tells the story of Shi Shilun, an upright official during the Kangxi period, who eradicated corrupt officials, solved crimes and caught thieves with the assistance of Huang Tianba and other Jianghu knights. Shi Shilun (1659-July 3, 1722), courtesy name Wenxian and nickname Xunjiang, was a famous upright official in the Qing Dynasty. A native of Yakou Township, Jinjiang County, Fujian Province (now Yakou Village, Longhu Town, Jinjiang City), his ancestral home is Gushi, Henan Province. He was later incorporated into the Eight Banners of the Qing Dynasty and the Xianghuang Banner of the Han Army. He was an official of the Qing Dynasty in China and the son of Shi Lang. He enforced the law impartially, was upright and honest, was not afraid of powerful people, and was diligent in civil affairs. He was known as "Shi Qingtian" among the people, and was called the most honest official in Jiangnan by Kangxi. There is a widely circulated chivalrous public case novel "Shi Gongan" among the people, which is the legend about him.
