The so-called "Oranges are oranges when they grow in Huainan, and they are tangerines when they grow in northern Huaihe". This sentence means that when orange trees grow north of the Huaihe River, they become different species and cannot grow. Out came the real citrus. Although this sentence is not quite correct, it roughly explains why orange trees can only be planted in the south and not in the north.
The main problem is climate. Orange trees can grow well in the warmer climate in the south, and the fruits they produce are larger and richer in taste. In the north, due to the severe cold weather, many orange trees either cannot survive the winter and freeze to death after they grow, or the fruits they produce are small, sour and have a bad taste. Therefore, orange trees are mainly produced in the south and are rare in the north for this reason.
Climate problems have resulted in many fruit trees being able to grow only in certain production areas, and these fruits are often uncompetitive for those outside this production area. Or its cultivation costs are high, there are many diseases and insect pests, and the fruits produced are not satisfactory.
For example, tropical fruits are basically grown in Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, southern Taiwan and Hainan. For other areas, these tropical fruits are often not grown. Tree species such as cherries and apples are basically planted north of the Huaihe River because these tree species cannot bear fruit in the south.
Apples often die in less than a year after they grow in the south, while cherries may grow in the south, but the fruit is very small and tastes sour and unpalatable, because cherries are It requires a cooler environment to bear fruit.
Hunan, Jiangxi and Guangxi are the three major citrus producing areas. Mandarin oranges are widely planted in Hunan, navel oranges are the most famous in Jiangxi, and emperor tangerines are more common in Guangxi. Although citrus can be grown in Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian and other places. However, the citrus production and quality in these places are not as famous as the three major citrus producing areas mentioned above, and the taste is better. Therefore, the vast majority of citrus in the country comes from the three major producing areas mentioned above.
Of course, for these places where citrus can be grown, many of the citrus on the local market are also produced locally. After all, the price of ordinary citrus is not high, but transportation costs account for the majority. So if citrus can be produced locally, then local production will be more competitive because the price can be more favorable.
Not only are citrus from the three major producing areas of Hunan, Jiangxi, and Guangxi more common, grapefruits are also mainly produced in these three places. Whether it is red or white, the quality of grapefruit from these origins will be better.
