Chongyang County is located in the southern corner of Hubei Province, southwest of Xianning City, and at the northern foot of the middle section of Mufu Mountain. It borders Tongshan to the east, Xiushui, Jiangxi to the south, Tongcheng and Linxiang, Hunan to the west, and Xian'an and Chibi to the north.
The hometown of Chongyang was Xiajun County established in the early Western Han Dynasty. Through the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Three Kingdoms, the Two Jin Dynasties, and up to the Southern and Northern Dynasties, although the affiliation has changed many times, the old name of Xiajun still exists. In the fifth year of Datong in the Southern Liang Dynasty (AD 539), Xiajun was analyzed as Lehua (Tongcheng) County, and Chongyang was still Xiajun. In the second year of Tianbao of Tang Dynasty (AD 743), Tangnian County was established, which was still combined with Lehua District. In the Five Dynasties, Wu changed its name to Zongyang in Tang Dynasty. The Southern Tang Dynasty is still called Tang Nian. This name was first used in the eighth year of Kaibao in the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 975). Because "all the mountains are worshiped together" within the territory, the county is named "Chongyang" ("Minutes of Fangyu Reading History"). In the fifth year of Xining (AD 1072), Xitong Town was promoted to Tongcheng County. In the fifth year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1135), Chongtong was reunited and reanalyzed in the fifteenth year (AD 1145). There were no changes from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties to the Republic of China. From 1929 to 1935, the Communist Party of China established Soviet regimes in two counties: "Hunan and Hubei Border" and "Shuchang" in Shuanggang, Jintang and other places. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Chongyang belonged to the Daye Administrative Office. In 1952, it was changed to the Xiaogan Administrative Office. In 1958, Chongtong was merged into Chongyang County. In 1959, the Xiaogan Administrative Office was abolished and Chongyang was transferred to Wuhan City. In 1961, Chongtong was reanalyzed and the Xiaogan administrative office was restored, with Chongyang still under it. Since 1965, Chongyang has been placed under the administration of Xianning District.
