At the beginning, this cemetery was only allowed to bury the remains of Islamic scholars, so the design of the tomb was like a mosque with a strong Islamic color. Throughout the cemetery, I saw the minarets of the mosque next to each other, becoming the "City of Thousand Towers". Moreover, the cemetery is beautifully decorated and has a strange shape. When tourists arrive at the cemetery, they won't feel gloomy and desolate as usual in the cemetery.
With the changes of the times, this cemetery not only buries Islamic scholars with status, but also allows wealthy upper-class aristocrats and wealthy Muslims to be buried here. In modern times, some poor Muslims have also squeezed into this cemetery. In this way, there are differences in the architecture of the cemetery, some are tall and exquisite, and some are short and simple, from which we can distinguish the social status and family situation in front of the tomb owner.
Due to the rapid increase in the population of Egypt, there has been a population crisis, coupled with economic difficulties and housing shortage, this ancient tomb, which has been silent for thousands of years, has become a gathering place for homeless people who have come to Cairo from other places or rural areas to settle down and make a living. What is particularly serious is that many houses in Cairo have not been repaired for many years, and houses have collapsed from time to time. Many residents have no place to live after moving out of the collapsed building, so they have to settle in the dead city. They moved away furniture, televisions, etc. According to official conservative estimates, they spent hot days and wet nights here. There are hundreds of thousands of "cemetery residents" who have settled here.
