Kaesong is the ancient capital of the Koryo era, which experienced more than 500 years of prosperity and traditional commerce flourished. Kaesong originally belonged to Gyeonggi Province, and became a border city of North Korea after the partition of North and South. Korean ginseng produced in the suburbs is world-famous and the highest among Korean ginseng. Kaesong Super City is a part of Kaesong Industrial Zone, similar to the special economic zone set up by Chinese mainland in Shenzhen, which allows investors from South Korea and other parts of the world to set up factories and become new light industry centers in East Asia and North Korea.
