The purpose of relevant research is not to outline the evolution history of Xiaoshan Nansha area, nor to simply investigate its existing rural dwellings and settlements, but to take the rural dwellings of several towns in Xiaoshan Nansha area as a series of samples to understand the situation of new China since the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Especially after the reform and opening-up, some characteristics and patterns of rural settlements and folk houses in the suburbs of China, as well as the external conditions contributing to their formation and organizational order. This book is suitable for scholars who specialize in vernacular architecture and settlements, and can also be used as reading materials for architects and college teachers and students interested in contemporary vernacular architecture.
Most of the houses in Shaoxing and Xiaoshan, especially those built by ourselves, have pointed roofs, while Ningbo is a little better. There may be local customs everywhere, including building houses, and it is also related to rainy areas in Zhejiang, where sharp roofs will not accumulate water.
The simple and true way of building local buildings has always attracted me. Over the past few years, I have followed my tutor over mountains and traveled all over the countryside in China.
Simple houses in the country can always stop me for a long time. The history, life, craft, ethics and education in rural houses attract my heart. How many times I have returned to the countryside from all directions, these houses can always arouse my myriad feelings. I enjoy the pleasure brought by this charming scenery, but I can't understand its inside story. It is my wish to record and understand the local buildings. During my doctoral thesis research, I visited the rural areas of Zhejiang, Hubei and Yunnan.
In the field investigation, I visited the rural scenery, investigated the rural houses and recorded the lives of the villagers. These experiences have enriched my experience, enlightened my mind, aroused my concern about contemporary rural residential buildings in China, and further clarified the research direction of my doctoral thesis.
