The Legend of Government House in Hong Kong

There have been various legends about the architecture of Government House in Hong Kong. The most famous one is that there is a secret underground passage in Government House, which can connect the headquarters of the Central Government, the headquarters of HSBC and even the British military base in Tamar. Until 2009, after a TV program produced by Radio Television Hong Kong was broadcast, the existence of the secret passage was confirmed through literature review.

It has been verified that there is an underground passage leading to the headquarters of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Albert Road in Central. The passage is at least 3 10/0m long, with a width ranging from1.2m to 3.4m and a height of about 2m, and is equipped with a lighting system. Located next to lower albert road Road, the exit is a road far away from the government headquarters, and its function is to protect officials from entering and leaving and storing confidential files. At present, the exit of the passage is sealed by two iron gates, which can only be opened from the inside to the outside with a key to prevent anyone from sneaking into the Governor's House through a secret passage.

In fact, this tunnel was used for air defense during World War II. It was built in1940165438+10, leading to the then government secretariat. The entrance of the tunnel was originally designed in the garden of the Government House, but Geoffry Northcote, then the governor of Hong Kong, was not satisfied with this design, so he changed the entrance of the tunnel into a storage room in the dungeon. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the British Hong Kong government discussed the air defense early warning strategy of the Japanese war with the British government, and mentioned extending the secret passage to connect with the basement of the government headquarters, but it was finally shelved due to insufficient funds. At the end of 1960, the British Hong Kong government proposed to extend the secret passage to connect the Governor's Office and the government headquarters, but it was shelved because of the high cost.

In addition, Ji Shijie, the secretary-general of the Social League who served as an administrative officer, said that as far as he knows, there is a dungeon on the ground floor of the east wing of the government headquarters as the command headquarters for general natural disasters and terrorist attacks. It is rarely used by the government on weekdays, and the dungeon can lead to secret passages and directly to the government building. In addition, the entrance of the passage is the stairs near the banquet hall of the Governor's Office, and it can also lead to the HSBC Bank, which is convenient for the Governor to make emergency withdrawals in wartime. Another famous legend refers to a geomantic war between China and Britain in the transitional period of 1980s and 1990s. The Chinese side has built a pointed Bank of China Building in Central, one of which faces the Government House. In this regard, the Governor invited Feng Shui experts to see Feng Shui, and finally decided to plant willows in the direction of the Governor's Garden facing the China Bank Building. In addition, there is a legend that when the Governor's Mansion was to be built, a geomantic expert pointed out that it was built at the current site, with the back mountain facing the harbor.
