Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminal Super Terminal 1

Super Terminal 1 is the cargo terminal of Hong Kong International Airport. It is located in Chek Lap Kok, Islands District, New Territories, Hong Kong. It is the second busiest airport cargo terminal in the world, second only to the cargo terminal of Memphis International Airport.

Super Terminal 1 is managed by Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited. The cargo terminal was completed at the same time as Chek Lap Kok Airport, with a construction cost of $ 10 billion and a handling capacity of 2.6 million metric tons per year, accounting for about 85% of Hong Kong's air cargo volume. Super Terminal 1 caused chaos in the first few days of the airport opening on July 6, 1998. A large number of air cargo piled up, and the cargo terminal at Kai Tak Airport needed to be reopened to handle cargo. On August 24th, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited announced that Super Terminal 1 had resumed normal operation.

The Hong Kong Government estimates that the chaotic operation of air cargo terminals from July 8 to the end of August has brought about a loss of about HK$ 4.6 billion to the Hong Kong economy, equivalent to 0.35% of the GDP. After the adaptation period, the efficiency of Super Terminal 1 has been continuously improved, and the current annual freight volume is 3.5 million metric tons.
