Among Hakka dwellings, besieged city is a unique one, and the most famous one is the besieged city in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Villages in cities, as the name implies, are both cities and villages. It not only has the function of anti-theft, but also can prevent soldiers from mutiny. This is a residential building with a military nature. Although the walled city is a village, its walls are strong and can withstand the bombardment of soil cannons. Therefore, after the British army painstakingly captured the Kowloon Walled City, it moved the iron gate of the Walled City to Britain to show its military exploits.
Xingning Hakka village
In Xingning, there is also this type of village in the city, but it is much smaller and less famous, and even many people in Xingning don't know it. According to the information I interviewed (unverified), Xingning has four city walls, which were built by the rich in the Qing Dynasty to defend the Taiping Army. These four castles were designed and supervised by the same master, who spent his whole life, but only completed three and a half. One of them was destroyed when Jinxing in Longtian moved to Ningjiang, and the other was submerged when building a reservoir. Only one well-preserved one is located in Tang Yang, Tian Yuan, Xingninglong, the birthplace of Tang Yang dialect (commonly known as snake dialect). According to Cheng Zhaizi, Cheng Zhaizi was built in Xianfeng period of Qing Dynasty and was raised by a branch of Han Guanggong of Roche. There is a tower on the periphery. Because of the need of defense, there are no windows on the ground floor, but the muzzle of ancient rifles is left, and the armory is equipped with gunpowder all the year round.
