There is a saying in the countryside that it is reasonable to live in front of the temple rather than behind it, and to live on the left rather than the right behind it.

According to the layout of the building, this rural proverb has some truth. According to our ancient Guide to Architectural Layout, it also contains the theory of geomantic omen. Since ancient times, our traditional architectural layout is usually based on sitting north facing south, and the layout is more scientific and reasonable. Then, since Buddhism was introduced into China, most of the conditional architectural environments were built according to the layout facing south. However, we know that most temples are built by mountains, so some temples can only be rationally arranged according to the mountain environment, and some temples have adjusted their seating direction, not all of them face south. Better live in front of the temple than behind it: Please note that the center of the Hall of the Great Hero will not change, but the overall layout of the Hall will not change. No matter where the temple sits, the layout of this central axis will not change. Then, in this case, if you live behind the temple, according to the scientific and reasonable statement, the real living environment is easy to eat "incense ashes", that is to say, it is affected by smog; Moreover, the Great Hall of the Temple is often enshrined by the Buddha. If you live behind a temple, according to the belief in Buddhism, the family can't bear the desire of worshippers to worship Buddha, and only the abbot can "endure" with "King Kong to protect the body and bless the Buddha". Therefore, the front of the temple is not as good as the back.

Better live in the left temple than the right temple;

This view is also influenced by the layout of temple buildings. According to the geomantic theory and scientific and reasonable theory, the surrounding temples are not good places to live. For example, during temple fairs and some festivals, incense is strong and smoky has no good influence on people around the home. Furthermore, building a house around a temple is easy to "shade" because the temple is grand and tall, which affects the lighting of people living at home. If you can only choose to live around the temple, why not live on the left side of the temple?

According to the geomantic omen theory and scientific and reasonable theory, the left green dragon and the right white tiger are "Shang"; According to the traditional layout style of sitting north facing south, the left side is the east side, which is less affected by the architectural pattern of the temple. Good sunshine, warm in winter and cool in summer, is relatively better for people who live.

See the picture above? Behind the temple, there is a building for monks to eat and live on the left, but not on the right. Even if there is, it won't be the living room. This can be found in our daily temple tour. No matter where the temple sits, the building on the left side of the temple is usually a place for family members to eat and live. Behind the temple, only the abbot's room, others, are not "qualified" to live, nor can they live.

This sentence is related to our traditional culture. Combined with scientific and reasonable architectural layout theory and some geomantic theory, this proverb "warning the world" has been formed.
