Gaozhou geology
Gaozhou is located in the transitional zone between tropics and subtropics, with mild climate, abundant sunshine and rainfall. There are ten rivers in the territory, with many lakes, hills, basins and plains criss-crossing, of which mountainous areas account for more than one tenth of the total area. Gaozhou soil is developed from metamorphic sandstone, granite, migmatite, tuff weathering, shallow sea sediments and river alluvial deposits.
Granite, gneiss and its weathered materials are distributed in the northeast, northwest and middle of the city, and are the main structures in Gaozhou mountainous and hilly areas. Sand shale and its weathered materials are distributed in the sediments and river alluvium in the southwest and shallow seas, and are the main structures in the southwest shallow hilly plain.
Gaozhou borders the South China Sea in the east, Jianjiang Plain in the south, Guangxi in the west and Yunkai Mountains in the north. It is the first of the four provinces in modern Guangdong (Gaozhou, Leizhou, Qiongzhou and Lianzhou).
