(Prose) Night Heron in Zhengzhou

The first summer is still peaceful, and the grass has not stopped. Before I can say goodbye to spring, summer has already arrived quietly. Returning to Zhengzhou, where I have been away for more than 30 years, I always want to walk around and feel my childhood. I came to my alma mater, Weiyiyi Primary School, and walked under the leafy towering trees, listening to the melodious and melodious songs of the birds. Looking up, the warm sunshine, swaying green leaves, and mottled tree shadows form the most natural and beautiful changes of light and shadow. The intertwining of longitude and latitude roads is very much like that rushing year in my memory.

During those years when I was studying in Beijing, at the east gate of Beijing Normal University, the Capital Square, the roof of the main building and Angel Road, when I walked out of the classroom at 5pm every day, I could see crows flying all over the sky and chirping. The spectacle always reminds me of the night herons on the French paulownia tree in front of Weiyi Road Primary School in Zhengzhou. Groups of them are circling and singing in the sky. There is a special feeling in my heart to have such a group of birds flying freely in the bustling city. At the same time, when school was over at Weiyi Road Primary School in the eastern section of Weiyi Road, Zhengzhou City, the children happily jumped to school like little angels. There were children after school along the road. At first glance, it looked like an angel road. road.

The quiet Jingwei Road records the changes in the lives of residents in the 68 years since the provincial capital was moved from Kaifeng to Zhengzhou in 1954. Hidden in the bustling city of Zhengzhou, Weiyi Road has 272 French paulownia trees on both sides of the road that are nearly 70 years old. It is the first batch of French paulownia planted in Zhengzhou. Nowadays, when walking on this road, the roar of cars and other noisy sounds will be left behind. On this quiet road, it feels like being in a park. On this most memorable road, the beautiful green city and the beautiful commercial capital carry the childhood memories of many old Zhengzhou people.

This area has a beautiful environment, and the French paulownia trees are tall and strong, with strong load-bearing capacity, suitable for birds to nest in. The most important thing is that the residents are of high quality and tolerant, and will not drive away the birds in the trees. The night heron here has a quiet and peaceful place to perch. Centered at the intersection of Weiyi and Meridian 5, it has become a nesting ground for flocks of migratory birds. Thousands of night herons live in the French palm trees on this road. These night herons are summer migratory birds that come to October every year in March. They stay here for about half a year every month, and make nests here to breed offspring from April to July. Night herons are one of the three nationally protected animals (that is, terrestrial wild animals protected by the country that are beneficial or have important economic and scientific research value). They like to live in groups and are especially nest-loving. Some breed here because they are interested in this place. They are affectionate and come back every year, and some even bring their companions with them to enjoy their family happiness. ?

Night herons are nocturnal birds that mainly feed on frogs, small fish, shrimps, and aquatic insects. They rest in the treetops during the day, and at night they take their birds to the Yellow River for a 'walk' in search of food, training their 'children' to catch fish and shrimp. Sometimes you will find small fish and shrimp under the big trees, that's where they come from. Food brought back to the bird's nest from the Yellow River. The protein content of fish and shrimp is high. The uric acid in the feces produced by night herons after digestion is difficult to dissolve in water, so the feces are white. When the birds gather together, you will hear the sound of "pat, pat", and from time to time, white bird droppings will fall from under the tall and thick French paulownia on both sides. Zhengzhou Weiyi Road was once jokingly called "the road of shit" by the citizens. ”, which shows the large number of night herons roosting.

When we were in school, some of our friends had particularly sensitive ears. They would judge the time difference between bird droppings falling from the height of the leaves based on the ticking sound of the leaves, and avoid bird droppings falling from the trees. It's like dodging missiles on the battlefield. Residents living here will wear hats or umbrellas when they go out in the summer, both to protect themselves from the sun and to prevent bird droppings from falling on them.

Summer is coming. On the streets of Weiyi Road, you can always see sanitation workers in raincoats cleaning the road, clearing street signs, scrubbing railings, cleaning up the streets, maintaining the sanitary environment here, and these night-time workers. The herons gather, meet and get to know each other, and guard the safety of this group of angels. Everyone knows that birds represent auspiciousness and peace. Where the birds nest, it means that the Feng Shui there is good and there is a sense of security, and it must be a Feng Shui treasure. Children after school also like this road very much. They like the number of French tung trees on both sides of the road and the flocks of birds.

Go to the southeast corner of the intersection of Jingwu Road and Weiyi Road. At the entrance of the Jinshui Road Police Station, you will see a blue box with the words "Henan Wildlife Rescue Center" on it. You can often see birds "resting" inside.

If you find an injured night heron or baby bird, just pick it up and put it in this box. The staff of the wildlife rescue station will check and rescue it in time to protect every night heron from harm.

I remember when I was a child, I often picked up naughty birds, baby birds with slightly grown wings. The teacher asked us to put it in a cardboard box first, and then put the cardboard box on the surrounding tree trunks. The big birds in the trees will come to feed and rescue them. These baby birds that have fallen down will not eat artificially fed food. They only eat food chewed and regurgitated by the big birds.

As we all know, Henan is located in the Central Plains. It is the only place where a large number of migratory birds migrate every year. It is also the best place for many birds to inhabit and transition. The local climate is very suitable for the life of some migratory birds. In addition, in recent years , people's awareness of environmental protection has increased, the urban natural environment has improved, and the green coverage rate has reached 40%, attracting more and more birds to make their homes here. Beilong Lake Wetland Park in the northeast of the city has a beautiful ecological environment, rich vegetation, and vast waters. It is an ideal home for a large number of migratory birds. Since 2010, hundreds of swans have made their home here.

Today, with the development of urbanization, over-exploitation and utilization of land has been controlled, riverbed and water systems have been restored, and the phenomenon of animals’ living space being squeezed by humans has been curbed. If one day, a group of night herons in Weilu, We all fly to Beilong Lake to settle down, and we can also see the beautiful scene of "the setting clouds and the lone wild geese flying together, the autumn water and the sky are the same color all the time".

From the night heron migration path, we witness the development and changes of the times, the tolerance and open-mindedness of Zhengzhou people, the growth and expansion of the little angels, and the memory and love of the migratory birds for the city of Zhengzhou. , will you come again next year?
