The former site of Jinyang is located in Guchengying Village, Dongchengjiao Village, Nanchengjiao Village, Nanbei Wayao Village, Luocheng Village and nearby areas in Jinyuan District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. The date of construction is unknown, and it first appeared in the history books in 497 BC.
It has successively been the capital of Zhao, Taiyuan County of Qin, the capital of early Han, the capital of former Jin and the capital of Northern Han. In 979 AD, the ruler of the Northern Han Dynasty surrendered to North Song Taizong, and Jinyang was occupied by the Northern Song Dynasty. Song Taizong set fire to Jinyang, and completely destroyed Jinyang with the method of "getting rich first, then serving, declining first and then rebelling".
Three years later, Taiyuan City was rebuilt in Tang Ming Town, north of Jinyang. Taiyuan County (now Jinyuan Street, Jinyuan District) was established in the southwest of Jinyang City in the Ming Dynasty.
