Nanjing was called Jinling in ancient times. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the King of Chu buried gold and made the King of Qi angry. After Qin Shihuang acceded to the throne, he cut off Fangshan Long Mai and led the Huaihe River across Jinling to vent the king's anger. Therefore, Jinling seems to be the residence of the emperor, but in fact it is "the imperial ghost has languished in Nanjing". 1902, Sun Yat-sen said in a chat with his friend Zhang Taiyan, "Jinling is not a house yet." In other words, Nanjing cannot live for a long time, nor can it become an imperial city. However, only ten years later, 19 12, the Republic of China was founded, but Sun Yat-sen insisted on taking Nanjing as the capital and even threatened members of Congress with force. Why?
Sun Yat-sen originally wanted to build Wuchang into the capital. After all, this is the birthplace of the revolution. Moreover, Wuchang "is good at raising the river, relying on Baoshan in the east and Xiangfan in the north, taking Fuhe Bear as the town, and laying the railway, but it is reasonable to go to the Great Wall". However, the reality is far from ideal. One month after Wuchang Uprising, Hanyang fell and Wuchang was tight. Many revolutionaries in Jiangsu and Zhejiang advocated that the political center should be located in Shanghai.
Soon, Nanjing was conquered by the new army, and everyone came to their senses and advocated making Nanjing their capital. This is a big deal. It can't be decided by a group of people eating melon seeds around the table and chatting. This requires a meeting of the Senate to vote. Results Beijing 20 votes, Nanjing 5 votes, Wuchang 2 votes, Tianjin 1 vote. This result seems unexpected, but Sun Yat-sen has made up his mind, so he colluded with Huang Xing. One played the bad COP, the other played the bad COP and threatened to connive. The next day's vote made Sun Yat-sen quite satisfied, with Nanjing 19 votes, Beijing 6 votes and Wuchang 2 votes.
The reason why Sun Yat-sen is so persistent is also a helpless move. Wuchang is ruined, so we can only choose between Beijing and Nanjing. "Beijing" is the capital of the Qing government. Although the Qing government abdicated in the future, the power was in the hands of Yuan Shikai, whose lair was in Beijing. If the government of the Republic of China decides the capital again, it will be like a sheep entering the tiger's mouth. This is also reflected in the fact that after Sun Yat-sen abdicated, he put forward two conditions for Yuan Shikai. First, the interim government will be located in Nanjing, and second, the new president must take office in Nanjing. This is to move Yuan Shikai out of his lair and put him under the supervision and control of revolutionary forces.
But Yuan Shikai didn't buy it. Instead, he succeeded the president in Beijing. People have troops and money. What can revolutionaries do? Therefore, the name of the capital of the Republic of China is in Nanjing, but the essence is in Beijing. Later, in order to flaunt himself as Mr. Sun's successor, Chiang Kai-shek also set Nanjing as the capital, and the result can be imagined.
