If the elm tree is behind the house, the bigger the tree, the better. It is auspicious to have elms behind houses, and future generations have surplus grain. And it can be used as a mountain in feng shui, with a backer behind it.
Elm is a good tree species for afforestation and garden because of its strong wind resistance and alkali resistance. It is one of the main tree species for street trees, windbreaks, courtyard greening and "four sides" greening in northern China. It is usually planted as a shrub and used as a hedge in arid and cold areas. Old stems and roots of trees have strong germination ability, and old elm piles can be collected into the ground to make bonsai. Ulmus pumila wood is tough, not easy to split and slightly resistant to corrosion. It is a good material for buildings, vehicles, columns, sleepers, furniture and farm tools. Bark fiber is tough and is the raw material of paper making and man-made fiber. Young leaves and fresh fruits are edible and can also be used as feed. Fruit, bark and leaves can be used as medicine, which has the effect of calming the nerves and helping sleep.
