Starting from 1998, the European Super Cup was changed to a deciding game, and the venue was fixed at Louis II Stadium in Monaco. This competition was held in 1973/74 season. The original idea was to play the Champions League and the Winners Cup. Since 2000, as the Winner's Cup has been merged into the UEFA Cup, the competition has been changed to Champions Cup and UEFA Cup champion.

At first, the European Super Cup finals were home and away games (with exceptions). Each of the two teams has a home and away game, and the winner of the total score wins the championship. At the same time, away goal (1980 Valencia beat Nottingham Forest by away goal) and overtime (1982 Aston Villa beat Barcelona) each played a decisive role. But the Super Bowl was never decided by a penalty, but by a golden ball. In 2000, Galatasaray defeated Real Madrid with the golden ball winning method.
The winning and losing mode of the Super Cup finals is the same as that of any European club finals. If the score of 90 minutes is a draw, there will be 30 minutes of overtime. If the two sides are still tied after overtime, a penalty will be taken to decide the champion.
