What's wrong with college elective courses?

In college, we can swim in the sea of books and learn from the source of knowledge; You can run the stadium and show your youthful demeanor; It can also be practical and enrich social experience. You can not only study this major, but also take various courses and arrange and manage your study independently. Maybe this is another charm of the university. What have elective courses brought us? What are the reasons for choosing elective courses? How can students learn elective courses better? Can the course selection system be better improved? In response to these problems, the reporter conducted an investigation and interview with some students and teachers.

In the interview, most students think that learning elective courses has many advantages, which can be roughly divided into the following three points: First, the setting of elective courses can effectively fill the gaps in knowledge, increase the width and breadth of knowledge, and also provide many ideas for the study and research of this major, enrich knowledge reserves and broaden horizons. Many teachers can provide students with the latest current events in class, so that students can keep abreast of social trends and state affairs. Secondly, some elective courses not only provide people with ways to further develop their hobbies, but also improve students' learning and communication skills, such as English conversation and elementary Korean. Thirdly, it enriches students' spare time and encourages them to arrange their study tasks and plan their study time more effectively. During the investigation, many students also shared some of their learning experiences with us, such as increasing learning initiative, recording some topics and thinking points of their own interest, and communicating with teachers more. At the same time, the reporter believes that we can avoid single "listening" when studying elective courses, and pay more attention to the use of hands and brains, which is not only conducive to better mastering knowledge, but also saves ourselves review time after class, which can be described as killing two birds with one stone.

At the same time, the reporter also learned that many elective courses attract students' attention, not only because of the interest and knowledge of the course itself, but also because of the personal charm of the teachers, such as Cai Limin, the teacher of Introduction, Zhou Jing, the teacher of Modern Communication and so on. A college Chinese student told reporters: "It is a pleasure to go to college Chinese. Under the vivid and wonderful teaching of Mr. Huo, we entered a magical and gorgeous writing world, from appreciating the charm of Tang poetry and Song poetry to understanding the meaning of ancient China Fu, so that all students can appreciate the subtlety of Chinese. A classmate who chose modern communication said: "Last week, Mr. Jing's class opened a door for us to understand society and life in the background of the times. Starting with hot topics, Mr. Zhou taught us how to look at problems objectively and scientifically, how to watch news and current events, and how to keep a clear head in complex public opinion. "

In this regard, the reporter interviewed several teachers who were welcomed by classmates and asked them to talk about their experiences and opinions.

Since 2004, Mr. Xu Yuping has been an elective course of college students' communicative psychology, which is also one of the most popular courses every semester. In the conversation with the reporter, she told us that many teaching goals can be achieved not only by teaching theoretical knowledge, but also by studying theory in other places. Students need deeper knowledge to apply the experience and understanding gained in class to practice and solve problems in reality.

Xu teacher also has his own teaching methods and forms. She attaches great importance to mobilizing students' enthusiasm and developing their potential. She has interactive activities in every class, such as performing sitcoms, or watching movies to discuss and write her feelings into film reviews. In addition, she has been taking her own growth experience as a case to introduce relevant knowledge to her classmates. She said that she should dare to set an example, dare to share her own stories and communicate with her classmates more, so as to set an example.

In an interview with Cai Limin, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, he said that it is very necessary for universities to offer public courses in humanities. "The way of university lies in". In college, you must first learn how to be a man. The opening of humanities elective courses aims at spreading humanistic knowledge, inheriting traditional culture and improving humanistic quality and life realm. Some ancient books, in particular, are still particularly attractive to contemporary college students. Therefore, elective courses such as Introduction to University and Introduction to Tao Te Ching can be widely welcomed by students.

Speaking of teaching methods, Dean Cai believes that teaching is a process of interaction between life and soul of teachers and students. In addition to preparing lessons carefully every day, he also pays attention to the choice of teaching methods and skills, and strives to arouse students' thinking in the teaching process.

In view of the problems existing in students' elective courses at this stage, Dean Cai pointed out that to achieve the real purpose and effect of elective courses, schools and students need to work together. As far as schools are concerned, it is necessary to strengthen the selection of elective courses, classify and integrate them from students' classroom reflections, make reasonable arrangements and strictly screen them to improve the teaching quality of elective courses; As far as students are concerned, they must think for themselves when choosing courses, and should not blindly listen and follow. On the one hand, we should consider our own time and energy, on the other hand, we should also comprehensively examine our own knowledge system, fill in the gaps in knowledge first, and then expand our ability of intensive reading and in-depth learning.

Xu Baoyun, a teacher of practical photography technology, believes that teaching is not only about imparting skills, but more importantly, influencing and achieving students. His elective courses not only teach photography skills, improve students' artistic appreciation ability and aesthetic level, but also teach students to be close to society and how to survive by telling their own photography experiences. He pays attention to photography and the development of students every day, and understands the needs of students and the changes of society; At the same time, the courseware is constantly updated to ensure that the latest photography techniques and concepts are taught to students. He hopes that Practical Photography Technology will not only help you learn skills, but also bring creative thinking to students.

Faced with the confusion of students' course selection, he suggested that the school make the classroom content into a short film, or take an audition to increase students' understanding of elective courses. And students should think rationally and choose what they need.

Through interviews, we found that students and teachers have a positive attitude towards elective courses, but at the end of each semester, most students are worried that they will not be able to choose their favorite courses or choose courses they don't like, which reflects that there are still some problems in the actual operation of the course selection system in our school.

Our school implements the credit system. In addition to completing compulsory courses, the main way to get credit is to study elective courses. Elective courses in our school are divided into professional elective courses and public elective courses, of which science and engineering account for about 25%, and literature, law, economics and management account for about 40%. The school has more than 100 elective courses and is open to thousands of students at the same time. However, there are great differences between courses in terms of hours, credits, subject content and difficulty, and the number of people that can be accommodated.

Obviously, some courses with relatively short class hours, relatively high credits and relatively simple content are bound to be selected by all students.

Generally speaking, a class can accommodate dozens to 300 students at most. When thousands of students in the whole school choose the same public class, the school adopts random selection to determine the list of students who can take this class. This method of drawing lots is generally the best and fairest, but it still has shortcomings.

First of all, the most striking feature of public elective courses is that they cover a wide range of objects. In order to let the students of arts, science and engineering touch and master other kinds of knowledge, it is very necessary to reduce the professionalism of public elective courses. But as we all know, the subjects of literature, law, economics and management are still much less difficult than those of science and engineering. Students of science and engineering will not have much difficulty in learning literature and history courses, while arts students need more efforts in learning science and engineering. Choosing easy refuge is undoubtedly the attitude of most students, and in this way, all students will inevitably flock to some social science courses with low difficulty and high credits, while some science and engineering courses with high difficulty and relatively strong professionalism will be suspended if the number of students does not reach the minimum standard. In this way, the intention of the school to expand students' knowledge through the intersection of disciplines and courses has not been well realized.

In addition, it has brought a waste of resources to a certain extent. Although public elective courses are open to the whole school, the significance and importance of the course content to each major are different. For example, for most students in our school, choosing art appreciation as a public course is only to increase their knowledge and cultivate their sentiment, but for students majoring in advertising in our humanities college, it is to master the necessary professional knowledge and skills. Therefore, it is not appropriate to randomly select students from this course in the whole school regardless of major. Each major has its own corresponding course in the public elective courses of the school. Choosing the corresponding course of this major is not only what most students expect, but also the most efficient use of resources. But in fact, because of the limited places, there are still many students who are very upset. Unfortunately, they can't choose these courses. Therefore, we believe that to solve this problem, we can adopt the following methods: according to the majors studied, all students who choose to fill in a certain course are divided into professional and non-professional, and randomly selected according to a certain proportion. This can not only protect the rights of more professional students, but also achieve the purpose of popularizing and popularizing knowledge among non-professional students.

Through a series of interviews with students and teachers, the reporter learned that both teachers and students hope that elective courses can be both informative and interesting, and give full play to their roles and functions. University study emphasizes autonomy, and the elective course system is like a window, which becomes a necessary way for students to play their learning initiative. We believe that with the joint efforts of everyone, the study of elective courses will bring more excitement to our college life.
