How to defend a thesis when studying in Canada

When it comes to history class, many students will think of long historical events, tangled years, times, places and boring lectures. When I was a senior one student in China, every time I took an exam, the teacher gave the students handouts. As long as I memorize it, it is not difficult to get high marks. When I was studying in Canada, I passed my thesis defense in history class. In fact, the key is to dare to challenge yourself.

Choose history and challenge yourself.

On the first day of school, I stepped into the history class a little nervously. Sure enough, all the classrooms are local except one Hong Kong girl. My history teacher, Mr. Shoemaker, and Mr. China have completely different teaching styles. Through various activities, he enables students to vividly understand historical events and cultivate their ability to improvise and speak fluently. Every activity is an assessment, and if students do not actively participate, it will directly affect the score.

Enter the debate and get high marks.

Colorful classroom activities include drama performances, compositions, case studies and lectures of various sizes. What impressed me deeply was a wonderful debate. The theme of the debate revolved around Greek civilization. The pros and cons need to discuss the pros and cons of Athens and Sparta in depth, and finally judge which city-state is better. Everyone needs to be responsible for the relevant special investigation and debate, and after the debate, they need to give their research notes to the teacher as a reference for grading. After the lottery, I was assigned to the Spartan group, responsible for collecting information about the role played by Spartan women in society and the education level of Sparta. When collecting information, I found that the education level in Athens was much higher than that in Sparta, and it was difficult to refute each other in education, so I had to prepare sufficient reasons to prove that women in Sparta could gain more rights and interests.

The day of debate has finally arrived. First, the leaders of the two sides made opening speeches. The leaders of both sides are the most eloquent students in the class, and they are evenly matched. Then the debate between the two sides has undoubtedly become the key to victory or defeat. In religion and art, Athens undoubtedly has the upper hand. Finally, when discussing military capabilities, our regiment launched a powerful offensive, and the momentum of the other side weakened, and the opportunity came. I stood up a little shakily and began to state my point of view. Although I was a little nervous at first, I found it not so difficult to stand in front of everyone because of my full preparation. After fully stating my point of view, I even made a little joke-historical research shows that women in Sparta are more attractive.

Endorsement is learning, while debate is more vivid learning, and it is also a kind of learning that teaches people to think. Learning history should not only remember some key concepts and knowledge points, but also use your brains to analyze problems and make history come alive. This way of education in Canadian schools makes me feel that history learning is really interesting!

The debate lasted for an hour and a half. According to the judgment of the teacher and the referee, our group won because of full preparation and sufficient evidence, and I also got a satisfactory score. Although I have to read a lot of historical materials in the preparation process, many words are unheard of, and the expression is not as calm as that of local students, but through hard work, I finally successfully completed my first speech in my life.
