The reason for this scene stems from a jewel theft case more than ten years ago. 1989, Jiang Kelai, a Thai waiter in the Saudi palace, stole $20 million worth of jewelry from the Saudi prince's palace. He escaped from the Saudi police and fled back to his hometown of Bangkok, Thailand. The angry Saudi royal family immediately asked Thailand to hunt down the thieves. At that time, Thai police chief Chalo arrested Jewel at 1990 and recovered all the jewels. However, after receiving the returned jewels, the Saudi royal family found that only a quarter of the jewels were genuine, and the rest were all exchanged by Chalo. Earlier, a Saudi businessman was sent to Thailand by the Saudi royal family to investigate jewelry theft, but he disappeared mysteriously. Three months later, three diplomats of the Saudi embassy in Thailand were killed in Bangkok, and the Thai police never solved the case.
All these facts have seriously affected the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Thailand, so the Saudi government stopped issuing work visas to Thais, and the diplomatic missions of the two countries were also reduced to the level of agents. So far, the relationship between the two countries is not satisfactory. In June this year, King Pompeii of Thailand celebrated the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne, and no members of the Saudi royal family were seen in more than 20 royal rooms.
In July this year, Lieutenant General Chalo, the former police chief of Thailand, was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment by the Thai criminal court for stealing the Saudi royal palace, while Jiang Kelai, who stole the jewels of the Saudi royal palace, was only sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment in 1990.
