How to participate in the NBA draft

Many procedures and rules of NBA draft are still like "seeing flowers in the fog" for some China fans. According to the time division, the annual NBA draft can be roughly divided into two parts. The first part is the draft lottery: the NBA began to implement the draft lottery from 1985. Every year when the playoffs are in full swing, the NBA will convene teams that fail to enter the playoffs to hold a lottery ceremony to determine the ownership of the top three draft picks in the future. In the lucky draw ceremony, the host will take out 1- 14 ping-pong balls and put them into the container. Four balls are randomly selected from 14 balls, regardless of numerical order. A * * can produce 100 1 possible combinations. Before the draw, the teams that didn't qualify for the playoffs had been ranked in reverse order according to the regular season record, and the corresponding combination number (probability) of winning the first prize was obtained. For example, in the 2004-05 season, 14 team did not enter the playoffs. In this 14 team, the eagle with the worst record got 250 combinations, that is, there was a 25% chance to win the first place, and the Hornets with the second worst record got 199, that is, 19.9% chance. After the draw for No.1 draft, four table tennis balls were put back into the container, and the ownership of No.2 and No.3 draft picks was decided again. After that, the remaining No.4-30 draft picks in the first and second rounds were decided in reverse order according to the results of the regular season.

In addition to the regular draft procedures, the NBA has added some special rules for American high school graduates and overseas players to participate in the draft. The following are the provisions of the NBA labor agreement for these two types of players to participate in the NBA draft.

Rules for American high school graduates to apply for conscription.

(1) Players who have settled in the United States and completed high school education can be eligible to participate in the NBA draft after giving a written notice to the NBA 45 days before the start of the draft, expressing their willingness to give up entering the university for further study. Once a player is selected by any NBA team, the following rules will apply:

(i) According to (b) below, if a player does not join the college basketball team, he will be eligible to participate in the NBA draft. From the day he gave up college entrance to the day he was eligible to participate in the draft, if an NBA team invited the player as required every year, it would be the only team that could sign a player contract with him.

In this part, once a player fails to give up the qualification to join the college basketball team after obtaining the qualification of the NBA draft, the draft will be regarded as his "second choice".

Players who are selected as "second choice" will abide by the applicable rules. If a player is selected because he gave up his college basketball qualification in the draft, he has not signed a player contract with the team that selected him, and has not been selected in the "second choice" (as explained in the previous statement), we call it a newcomer free agent.

(ii) If a player joins the college basketball team, he can still be eligible to participate in the NBA draft once he gives up the opportunity to continue playing for the college basketball team. At that time, the NBA team that selected him in the draft and sent him an invitation every year as required will reserve the priority to negotiate and sign a player contract with him one year after the draft date.

In this part, once a player fails to give up his qualification to join the college basketball team after winning the NBA draft, the draft will be regarded as his "primary election" and the next draft will be regarded as "second choice". Players who are selected as "second choice" will abide by the applicable rules.

(b) Players who have settled in the United States and completed high school will be eligible to participate in the next NBA draft if they are not eligible to participate in the NBA draft and sign contracts with professional basketball teams outside the United States. If selected, he will be regarded as a "player" as defined in Section 4 above. In this section, "professional basketball team" refers to a basketball team that pays any kind of money or remuneration that exceeds the general living expenses to the basketball players who play for it in any country.

Rules for overseas players to participate in NBA draft

(a) In this section, "overseas player" means any amateur or professional basketball player who is designated to live outside the United States.

(b) Overseas players are eligible to participate in the NBA draft after reaching the age of 22. Any player who is over 22 years old and has not been selected in the draft on his 22nd birthday is called a rookie free agent.

(c) Despite the provisions in subsection (b) above, overseas players who have never participated in the American college basketball team are still eligible to participate in the draft before their 22nd birthday:

(1) Before conscription, he must be at least 18 years old;

(ii) He must give a written notice to the NBA 45 days before the draft starts, expressing his wish to be qualified to participate in the draft.

(d) If an overseas player plays for the American college basketball team in the season before the draft, he must abide by the provisions in Section 5 above on continuing to complete or give up college studies.

Traditionally, the rules of the draw ceremony in NBA draft are: put 1 to 14/4 table tennis balls into a drum, and choose four balls from them to form a combined result. A * * will have 100 1 combination results. If one result is ignored, the remaining 1000 results will be randomly assigned to 13 teams by the computer.

The worse the team's record in the regular season, the more results will be distributed. The team at the bottom of the league will get 225 results.

Then shake out four balls like a lottery, and a group of four numbers is born. Which team's performance includes this, it will have the first prize. Then put the four balls back in the bucket, repeat the above process twice, and take the second and third draft (note: if the ignored result is shaken out, it will be invalid, put the balls back and repeat the above procedure). Teams that don't get the top three picks will get the fourth to thirteenth rookies according to their regular season records. The worse their record, the higher their ranking in the draft.

According to the regulations, the whole lottery process will be attended by NBA officials, 13 team representatives and accountants who supervise the lottery. After the "lucky draw", the accountant will put the cards with the team logo in three envelopes marked 1 to 3, and then seal them. Neither granick, vice president of NBA, nor the team representative can know in advance what the result is in the envelope.

Subsequently, the NBA will officially announce the lottery results. First, the draft picks from 4th to 13 were announced, and then granick opened the envelope and announced the top three teams in turn. This means that the team marked in the last opened envelope will win the "No.1 pick" in the draft one month later.

[edit this paragraph ]NBA draft draw

The Board of Directors of NBA held a meeting in Salt Lake City in June, 1984. At that time, they voted to decide the order in which the teams that missed the playoffs chose the first round rookie. This system started at 1985. Before that, between 1966- 1984, the team with the worst record in the east and west will decide who will win the first draft by flipping a coin. In the NBA draft draw, the team with the worst record in the regular season is most likely to win the first draft, while the team with the best record in the playoffs has the least chance. The draw will determine the order of the first three teams, while the remaining teams that missed the playoffs will be selected in the reverse order of the regular season records. In the lucky draw ceremony, the host will put 1- 14 ping-pong balls in a drum container. Randomly selecting four balls from 14 balls can generate 100 1 possible combinations, regardless of the selection order. Before the draw, the teams participating in the draw were ranked according to the regular season and got the combination of 1000. Four table tennis balls will be drawn to the top of the container in turn to form a four-digit combination, and the team that gets this combination will get the first draft. Then, the four ping-pong balls will be sent back to the bottom of the container, and then the previous situation will be repeated to decide who the second and third draft picks belong to. If the selected combination is not within the allocation range, the lottery will be re-drawn.

[Edit this paragraph] Select a player

All American players can automatically enter the NBA draft after graduating from college. American players can also announce their participation in the draft after graduating from high school and completing their college studies. The NBA has set a date for two players to announce their participation in the draft. All players who wish to participate in the draft will not automatically meet the draft conditions. They must announce their participation in the draft before or on the first draft day. After that, the NBA will set up several pre-draft training camps for those players who may participate in the draft in the future, so that players can show their abilities and skills to the league teams in the training camps. Any player can make a decision to withdraw his name before the final announcement of the draft date, decide not to participate in the draft of that year, and finally announce the draft date one week before the draft meeting. This is very important for college students, because if they announce their participation in the draft on or before the first draft day, they will not lose their university study qualification. If they do not officially announce their participation in the draft until the last draft day, they will lose the opportunity to pursue further studies in the university regardless of whether an NBA team selects them in the end. One more thing, if a player signs a contract with an agent, he will automatically end his college studies. When a player is selected in the first draft, the team that selected him must sign with him for at least four years (3+ 1 or 2+2), while the team that selected the player in the second round can "own" the player for three years, but the team does not have to sign with them. The sooner a player is selected in the draft, the higher his value. The first player selected in the draft is usually called the "number one scholar", and they are usually the best among all the players participating in the draft. However, just because a player is selected in the first round does not mean that he will definitely become a superstar in the future. Michael Jordan was selected as the third overall pick in the first round of 1984 draft, but he is generally regarded as the greatest player in NBA history. Among the two players selected by Jordan before, one is "Dream" Olajuwon and the other is sam bowie. Olajuwon was elected to the NBA Hall of Fame after a great career, while sam bowie hastily ended his career due to constant injuries and made no achievements. All these show that the results of NBA draft are not necessarily directly related to the future development of players, and the players selected at the bottom of the draft are not necessarily worse than those at the top of the draft.

[Edit this paragraph] After selecting the rookie,

After selecting a rookie, the team can choose to sign with him, or give up, or exchange directly. If the rookie is abandoned, he will become a free agent (unrestricted). If it's a deal, the rookie who didn't get the contract will be paid zero as the draft pick. After the team signed a contract with the rookie, they could not trade him for 60 days. If the rookie doesn't want to sign with the team that selected him, the team doesn't agree to trade or give him up, the rookie can't sign with other NBA teams within one year, and the team that selected him reserves the right to sign for one year; Rookie can also participate in next year's draft.

[Edit this paragraph] China players in the ]NBA draft.

1987, Song Tao was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the 67th overall pick in the third round, but Song Tao was seriously injured and had to miss the NBA. 1999, Wang was selected by Dallas Mavericks in the 36th overall pick in the second round. On 200 1, Bater went to Denver for a trial training and participated in the preseason. 200 1 joined the nuggets as a free agent, and 0 1-02 started playing in the NBA. In 2002-03, he played for the San Antonio Spurs and won the championship, becoming the first person in Asia. July 2003, 17.

In 2002, Yao Ming became the number one scholar; In 2003, Xue Yuyang was selected by the Mavericks in the 57th overall pick in the second round before he even proved himself in CBA, and then traded to Denver Nuggets, but Xue still had no chance to set foot in the United States. In 2007, Yi Jianlian was selected by Milwaukee Bucks in the sixth place. Sun Yue was selected by the Lakers in the 40th overall pick in the second round, rewriting the history that China defenders did not enter the NBA. But he didn't sign a contract with the Lakers. Instead, in August 2008, the Lakers signed a two-year contract with Sun Yue, which means that the "China Magician" will appear in the NBA as the first China defender in the 2008-09 season. In the 2008-09 season, with Kobe leading the Lakers to win the championship again by defeating Magic in the East, Sun Yue also won the championship ring. On August 1 day, 2009, the Lakers officially announced that Sun Yue had been laid off.

[Edit this paragraph] New age limit

In the past, many young players chose to directly challenge the NBA stage after graduating from high school, and many people made their mark in the NBA. However, starting from 2005, such a situation will become a historical memory. In the past, players could participate in the NBA draft as long as they were over 18 years old. However, according to the age limit of the new NBA draft, players must be over 19 years old to qualify for the draft. In this way, many 18-year-old players who have completed high school will have to choose to spend a year in college or hone their skills overseas, and then challenge the NBA stage after reaching the age limit. The reason why the NBA revised the draft age limit is mainly to prevent high school graduates from rashly challenging the NBA draft without deciding whether to go through the baptism of the NCAA incident. If this situation continues to expand, the excitement of NBA events will inevitably be greatly reduced. In the 2004 draft, eight senior high school advanced placement students in the No.1 draft of 19 were favored by NBA teams, among which Howard joined the Magic camp as the No.1 draft, and shaun livingston also put on the speedboat shirt in the fourth place. Last summer, among the top 45 in the NBA draft, six high school graduates were favored by the team. Trailblazers chose martell webster in the sixth pick, while Jazz chose C.J. Myers in the 34th pick. In recent years, the situation that senior high school advanced placement students are loved by NBA teams can be seen. But NBA officials believe that if this situation continues to develop, it will inevitably get out of hand. Therefore, NBA President Stern insisted that NBA scouts leave the high school campus. Although the new draft age limit caused a lot of backlash, King's general manager Jeff petrie thought it was a good decision. "To tell you the truth, I quite agree with this practice. We have indeed seen excellent advanced placement students in high schools like James, but that is a minority after all ... "
