Therefore, the dual-engine configuration was not adopted in the end. As for the F-35B fighter, the initial configuration was single thrust. On the one hand, the use of single thrust has a certain technical inheritance with F- 16, on the other hand, it is also a consideration to improve reliability and reduce fleet operating costs. Therefore, the aerodynamic layout of F-35B VTOL aircraft with single thrust engine and lift fan is the result of comprehensive consideration.

Although the technical feasibility is no problem, we have to say that the technical and tactical necessity of changing the J-20 fighter into a vertical take-off and landing aircraft is problematic.

Technically, if the J-20 wants to change the vertical take-off and landing configuration, the tail nozzle needs to be equipped with an elbow-bar rotating mechanism, so there is no need to increase its own weight. A lift fan is also needed in the front of the fuselage. The lift fan is obviously a thing that takes up more space and increases its own weight. For example, the lift fan of the F-35B fighter not only occupies the avionics cabin of the aircraft, but also occupies a considerable bomb bay space, making the F-35B fighter the smallest model in the whole F-35 fighter series. If the J-20 is to be equipped with a lift fan in front, the impartial lift fan will just poke the main bomb bay in the head, and then the main bomb bay will be pulled off by at least one third. And because the engine is lying behind the main bomb bay, it is difficult to extend backwards. So if the J -20C needs a lift fan, it will probably learn from the F-35B and pull the bomb bay to both sides. However, unlike the F-35B, the J-20 is still a twin-engine model. If the bomb bay is placed on both sides, it will have a serious conflict with the air intake of two engines, so it is difficult to have a solution.
From Ivan's point of view, it is not technically impossible for the J-20 fighter to change its VTOL configuration, but the performance cost after changing the VTOL configuration is too high, and the tactical performance of the fighter has not been greatly improved, so it is not worth changing the VTOL configuration for it. China's navy and air force do not need these two requirements. Therefore, tactically speaking, VTOL aircraft should be an invalid demand for us.
