On April 18, FIBA announced the list of 40 men's basketball teams that will participate in the qualifiers of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games this summer. These teams are absent from the 2023 Men's Basketball World Cup.
The 40 teams participating in the Olympic qualifiers include 28 teams that participated in the second round of the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers but failed to qualify for the World Cup, and 12 teams that did not participate in the first round of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers but did not advance to the second round.
Since the British team did not sign up for the competition, Croatia (the highest ranked European team among the teams that did not participate in the second round of the 2023 Men's Basketball World Cup qualifiers) will replace the British team. Bulgaria (the second highest team in Europe that did not participate in the second round of the 2023 Men's Basketball World Cup qualifier) will replace Russia in the Olympic qualifiers.
Introduction to the Rules of Basketball Competition in 2024 Olympic Games
First, 24 teams will be divided into 6 groups according to the order of drawing lots, with 4 teams in each group. Then, during the group match, each team will compete with the other three teams. The winner of each game will get 2 points, the draw will be 1 point, and the loser will get 0 points. Next, the top two in the group stage will enter the single elimination stage.
In the single knockout stage, the top two of the eight group matches will enter the top 16, and then compete in the form of single knockout until four promotion places are finally produced.
