Yuanmou is located in the northern part of the central Yunnan Plateau, with east longitude10135 ′-102 06 ′ and north latitude 25 23 ′-26 06 ′. It is a county under the jurisdiction of Wei Chu, bordering Wuding in the east, Lufeng in the south, Dayao in the west, Huili in the north and Huili in the southwest.
The county seat is 0/89 km away from Kunming, the provincial capital, 0/43 km away from Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province and 0/34 km away from Chuxiong Prefecture. The county covers an area of 202 1.69 square kilometers, with a "Shau Ji 'ao" shape, high around and low in the middle, and inclines from south to north. The lowest altitude in the territory is 898 meters and the highest altitude is 2835.9 meters.
Yuanmou is the birthplace of mankind. The "Yuanmou Man" 654.38+07,000 years ago is famous in the world because of its earliest human being discovered so far, with rich remains of paleontology, paleoanthropology and ancient culture.

The annual "Torch Festival" and "Huashan Festival" are traditional festivals of the Yi and Miao nationalities, among which Yuanmou Lantern Festival is the most famous. Since the late Ming Dynasty, the traditional customs of Lantern Festival in February and March have been passed down to this day.
