Kiki doesn't talk to Kiki (at least not to people) not because Kiki has lost her magic, but because they have all grown up. The book explains that a little witch and a black cat grew up together, so they can talk to each other (you can notice that Kiki's mother never talks to Kiki directly). They can communicate not because of magic itself (although such a long-lived cat may really have some magic), but because they are too close. According to Miyazaki Hayao's design, Kiki can't talk to Kiki even if she finally regains her mana-because Kiki has really grown up, and she no longer needs the "other self". Miyazaki Hayao said, "The most important thing for Kiki is whether she can face all kinds of people independently. As long as she flies in the sky with her cat on a broom, she will be free. But living in the city and receiving training means that there are no more brooms and Kiki. She must walk alone on the road of the city, and she must talk to people. Kiki and Kiki can establish a new relationship with independent personality. They are still friends, but this friendship has added new elements (such as Lily and Kiki's children). ?
