Xiamen is a sub-provincial city in Fujian Province, one of the five cities under separate state planning, and one of the first five special economic zones opened to the outside world in China. It enjoys provincial economic management and local legislative power. Located in the southeast of Fujian, it is adjacent to Zhangzhou in the west, Quanzhou in the north and Jinmen Island across the sea in the southeast. It used to be the shortest frontline position between China and Japan, and it was continuously bombed during the hostility between the two sides. Famous scenic spots include Gulangyu Island, Jimei Guilaitang, Shiwan Botanical Garden, Xiamen University, Haicang Bridge, Tongan Film and Television City, Jimei Garden Yuan Bo and Nanputuo Temple.
