Wu Zetian's most famous story

Wu Zetian's most famous story is as follows:

According to the Chronicle of Tang Poetry, in the twelfth lunar month (69 1), the second year after Wu Zetian proclaimed himself emperor, a minister lied that all flowers were in full bloom and invited Wu Zetian to visit the Shen Du Garden. Wu Zetian agreed at first, and soon noticed the difference in the picture, so she played along and wrote a poem urging flowers (see "La Ri Xuan Zhao Xing Shang Yuan").

After writing, Wu Zetian took this as an imperial edict and sent messengers to Shangyuan to announce the imperial edict and inform the flower god. In the early hours of the morning, exotic flowers filled the garden, and ministers were surprised (but Chronicle of Tang Poems thought it was not credible, and thought that most of Wu Zetian's poems were written by Yuan and others).

The folklore "The Secret Record of Crane Control" links this matter with peony, and it is adapted, and there is a saying that "Wu Zetian is angry with peony": Wu Zetian drank wine on a snowy day, wrote a poem, and while drunk, wrote an imperial edict: "Daming Garden, the fire is urgent, the flowers must be released overnight, don't wait for the breeze to blow." Hundreds of flowers are awed by this fate and bloom together overnight, but peony can't resist it.

Wu Zetian was furious and demoted the peony to Luoyang. As soon as the strong and unyielding peony arrived in Luoyang, it was in full bloom with its head held high, which further angered Wu Zetian and made her order the peony to be burned. Although the branches of the peony were burnt, by the next spring, the peony bloomed more vigorously. Because this Luoyang peony is so tenacious in the fire, people praise it as "burnt peony".
