Beijing promoted "walking left and standing right" on escalators during the Olympics, and now Shanghai is also promoting this practice for the World Expo.
I am also opposed to this "international practice".
Safety:
1. Based on the analysis of the equivalent European standards adopted by our country, the safety standards of escalators are lower than those of vertical elevators.
2. The design of escalators is different from the design of stairs, so they are not suitable for moving forward and backward on the escalator. Even if the escalator is stopped, only the 30-degree escalator can be used as an emergency exit. .
3. The chance of falls and other dangers will increase.
In terms of design and maintenance costs:
If you stand on one side and walk on the other side, the wear and tear on one side of the escalator equipment will increase, which will increase maintenance costs. However, in order to reduce maintenance costs, Strengthening one-sided components will also increase manufacturing costs.
In terms of transportation capacity:
In theoretical calculations, someone seems to have calculated that when the number of people walking on the left and the number of people standing reach a certain ratio, the transportation of people will be accelerated. Of course there is nothing wrong with the calculation formula, but what is the actual situation? Even in countries that have promoted "walking on the left and standing on the right", when there is a large flow of people, it can only happen that both sides are standing at the same time for transportation, because in theoretical calculations, the speed of passengers entering and exiting the escalator is often ignored, and the speed of passengers stepping on the escalator is often ignored. After getting on the escalator, they will not walk immediately. They will only start walking when the passengers adapt to the speed of the escalator itself. This adaptation time, after accumulation, will make it impossible for the passengers behind to walk, causing congestion.
Therefore, improving efficiency only appears in theory, and the congestion that occurs in reality is the best proof to refute this theory.
Humanistic aspects:
Is this "walking left and standing right" a form of discrimination against people with unilateral arm disabilities?
Execution:
Many of the countries and regions that implemented the policy of "walking on the left and standing on the right" in the early days no longer advocate this rule. For example, Japan, which took seven years to promote "walk left and stand right" before it was effective, no longer advocates this practice.
For everyone’s safety, it is recommended that everyone follow the riding instructions when riding the escalator. Hold the handrails on one or both sides tightly and do not move forward or backward on the moving escalator.
