Are elm moths rare?

No. Elm is a large nocturnal LEPIDOPTERA insect, which is common in Europe and Asia. Adult individuals mainly feed on elm leaves, hence the name. Ulmus pumila is not a very rare species in the distribution range, with strong adaptability and extensive habitats, and can live in various types of forests, grasslands, wetlands and farmland. Because of its wide habitat and relatively large number, elm borer is easy to be observed in suitable environment. In a specific region or ecosystem, the number of elm borer will be affected by environmental changes, human activities and other factors. In some disturbed or destroyed habitats, the number of Ulmus pumila will decrease, making it relatively rare locally, but generally speaking, Ulmus pumila can be considered as an ordinary or universal species within its natural distribution range.
