Sun Simiao was born in Sunjiayuan Village, Yao County, Shaanxi Province at the end of Sui Dynasty. Located in the Loess Plateau, it has harsh natural conditions, lack of water resources and poor living conditions. For Sun Simiao, who has lived in this environment since childhood, he has a deep understanding of the sufferings of the people. Sun Simiao was sickly when he was young and needed to take medicine all the year round, which made the already poor family worse. But Sun Simiao's parents didn't delay their son's study because of the hardships of life. They insisted that Sun Simiao learn from his teacher.
Therefore, Sun Simiao was grateful for his parents' painstaking efforts, and hated his body for failing to live up to expectations, so he made a determined effort to study hard in order to achieve fame. However, I am anxious to catch the plague, and my life is at stake. It is said that I saved my life only after a beautiful doctor gave me medicine. This incident touched Sun Simiao greatly, and he deeply felt the importance of being a doctor. So when he was eight years old, he made an oath: study medicine diligently, take practicing medicine as his lifelong career, and save people suffering from diseases all over the world.
Before his death, Sun Simiao often subsidized the people, treated the poor for free, and taught them the methods of health preservation and disease prevention. His book Qian Jin Fang Yao is a masterpiece of medieval medicine and one of the necessary reference books for later doctors.
There is a question about Sun Simiao, that is, why don't his descendants take the surname Sun? There are two opinions about why Sun Simiao's descendants don't take the surname Sun. First, Sun Simiao changed his surname in order to bless future generations and avoid disasters. Sun Simiao often went to the royal family to treat them. Although this is a great honor, as the saying goes, companions are like tigers, and they will be punished one day. Sun Simiao told the next generation to change their names and surnames in order to avoid being exterminated in the future.
In ancient China, in order to avoid family involvement, it was not uncommon for descendants to change their names and surnames, so this statement is also reasonable. Second, Sun Simiao appeared after his death, asking his descendants to change their surnames. According to legend, some time after Sun Simiao's death, the villagers in his hometown suddenly fell ill for some reason, and the high fever persisted for a long time. Although they sought medical treatment in many ways, it had no effect. Finally, everyone had no choice but to come to Sun Simiao's grave and bow down and pray, hoping that he would appear in the sky and save the villagers.
After that, everyone saw Sun Simiao riding a tiger, waving his bafan, and came to everyone to tell them that if they want to be safe in the future, they must change their surnames. Later, Mr. Wang explained that everyone changed Sun's surname to Jiao, Zhang and Li. Since then, the whole village has been healthy and prosperous, and few people have been sick. The reason why Sun Simiao's descendants don't have Sun's surname is passed down from mouth to mouth by the villagers, and there is no exact historical evidence so far.
