The People's Republic of China People's Police Law
Article 1 This Law is formulated in accordance with the Constitution in order to safeguard national security and social order, protect the legitimate rights and interests of citizens, strengthen the construction of the people's police force, strictly administer the police, improve the quality of the people's police, ensure that the people's police exercise their functions and powers according to law, and ensure the smooth progress of reform, opening up and socialist modernization.
Article 2 The tasks of the people's police are to safeguard national security, maintain social order, protect citizens' personal safety, personal freedom and legitimate property, protect public property, and prevent, stop and punish illegal and criminal activities.
The people's police include the people's police of public security organs, state security organs, prisons and reeducation-through-labor administrative organs, and the judicial police of people's courts and people's procuratorates.
Article 26 The people's police shall meet the following conditions:
(1) Citizens who have reached the age of 18;
(2) Supporting the Constitution of People's Republic of China (PRC);
(3) Having good political and professional qualities and good conduct;
(4) Being in good health;
(5) Having graduated from high school or above;
(6) Volunteering in the work of the people's police.
One of the following circumstances, shall not serve as the people's police:
(1) Having received criminal punishment for committing a crime;
(2) Being expelled from public office.
Twenty-seventh people's police recruitment must be in accordance with the provisions of the state, open examination, strict assessment, merit-based recruitment.
