If you don't believe in ghosts, what do you believe?

A survey recently completed by Dr. Cheng Ping, a researcher at the National School of Administration, became a hot topic last week. The survey named "Investigation and Analysis on the Quality of County-level Civil Servants in China" shows that more than half of county-level civil servants believe in superstitious phenomena such as "face", "Duke of Zhou", "constellation prediction" and "seeking for a visa", and they are afraid of the predicted disaster. At least, they hold the attitude of "believing what is there but not what is there". Some scholars have pointed out that there is an inevitable connection between corruption and superstition, and superstition will only breed with corruption. Without ideals and beliefs, officials began to fight for their own interests rather than national interests, so there was corruption. At the same time, officials will feel wronged for their actions and hope to be blessed by the gods, which is why officials advocate superstition today. I am also a firm believer in Marxism-Leninism, but my mother is a standard believer in ghosts and gods. Mother has never done anything wrong. In our compound, she is recognized as the kindest woman. My mother often sits in the yard and tells us ghost stories about "one good turn deserves another, and one evil turn deserves another". Only when a person walks straight can he truly achieve inner perfection, and what a person pursues all his life is inner perfection. I grew up listening to my mother's ghost stories. One is the president of a bank in Chengdu, the other is the county magistrate, the other is the president of a hospital, and the other is me, the only college student in my family. Although we don't worship ghosts and gods like our mother did in those days, we all have some awe in our hearts. We believe in "good is rewarded with good, evil with evil" and regard it as the creed and criterion of treating people. Governors, county heads and deans also believe what their mothers say, and always regard being kind to others as the criterion of their daily work. Sometimes during the Spring Festival or in Tomb-Sweeping Day, when they go home, they will listen to their mother and go to Kannonji to burn incense. Their happy life is not only the result of their own efforts, but also the result of God's blessing. If you do something bad, others can't see it, and the gods can see it, then you must be a good person. They have great respect for their mother's words. When we ask ourselves where we are in the zone where the behavior coordinate system is very vague, we are actually asking where we should go. Life experience tells us that China's experience is that we always get instructions on how to go the wrong way and where to go, but where we are is often blank or broken and incomplete. Everyone criticized and questioned the officials' belief in ghosts and gods. However, few people have analyzed why this happens. Why do people prefer to believe in ghosts and gods rather than ordinary people? Why do you believe that ghosts and gods are a symbol of official corruption? Modern society is a society eager for quick success and instant benefit. Not many people can have long-term vision and patience. Everyone would rather believe in people and things that can directly affect their own interests. People always need to have spiritual sustenance, otherwise, as a famous writer said, "After a splendid festival, we will look at the empty wall and feel that we want to cry quietly." We often ask ourselves what is the most important thing. What do we really need? If we ask too much, we will doubt the value of our existence. Comic writer Qian Xiaoyan once said, "No one likes to be in debt, so those who get your help today are likely to hate you the most in the future." Under such circumstances, how should people arrange their behavior?
